🙋♂️ A Personal Message from Marius Gellert – Founder and First Chairman
As a wheelchair user, I experience every day how many barriers still exist in everyday life.
That is exactly why, together with committed supporters, I founded the association “Rollstuhlgerecht in Stadt Werne e. V.”
Our goal: a city where every person – regardless of disability – can participate everywhere.
Because of my illness, we have made it our mission to make the city of Werne more wheelchair-accessible and to improve cooperation between various stakeholders.
These include restaurant owners, the city of Werne, the Disability Advisory Council, the Ministry of Finance of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Aktion Mensch, the KfW Bank, the LWL (Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe), and many other authorities and organizations.
As a wheelchair user, I face challenges every day that make my life more difficult.
Especially when it comes to leisure activities, it becomes clear how many barriers still exist – whether it’s access to restaurants or nearby places.
To plan my free time, I first have to research which places are accessible for people with severe disabilities.
In doing so, basic questions often arise:
-
Where can I participate as a wheelchair user?
-
Are there accessible entrances?
-
Are there wheelchair-accessible toilets available?
Every person has the right to leisure and social participation.
However, it often takes a lot of effort to find out which places are truly accessible.
That is exactly why I developed the idea for this website.
Here, affected people and anyone interested can quickly and easily find all the important information they need to plan their leisure time without barriers.
In addition, we actively work to raise awareness about accessibility and to support companies and public authorities in making their services more inclusive.
Our goal is a city where everyone – regardless of disability – can take part fully and equally in social life.
VOLUNTEER WORK – A DEFINITION
Volunteer work refers to performing an unpaid task that serves the common good of society. Another term for this is civic engagement. This highlights three key concepts associated with volunteer work: voluntary, unpaid, and community-oriented.
