“A Doorbell for Everyone” – Access on Equal Terms

Fig. 1: Exemplary implementation of the project © InklusionsKlingel, featuring a portable folding ramp for barrier-free access.
Many people encounter barriers in their daily lives. Even a single step at an entrance can prevent people using wheelchairs, walkers, canes, strollers, or those with other impairments from entering a shop or facility independently. Major structural renovations are not always immediately possible everywhere. Nevertheless, simple solutions can provide quick assistance. That is exactly what the © InklusionsKlingel (Inclusion Doorbell) is designed for.
What is the © InklusionsKlingel?
The © InklusionsKlingel is an easily accessible doorbell located at the entrance. It allows people to request assistance when the entrance is not barrier-free. When the doorbell is pressed, staff inside the building receive a signal and can come to the door. When combined with a portable ramp, many barriers can be overcome quickly and without complication.
Our Concept
The association *Rollstuhlgerecht in Stadt Werne e.V.* (Wheelchair-Accessible in the City of Werne) aims to acquire © InklusionsKlingeln and portable ramps. These aids are intended to be made available on a long-term basis to suitable facilities, such as:
-
small shops
-
restaurants and eateries
-
medical practices
-
service providers
-
associations and clubs
-
community centers
-
cultural institutions
-
event venues
The aids remain the property of the association and are utilized to promote accessibility, inclusion, and participation.
Our goal is to dismantle everyday barriers in a way that is quick, practical, and affordable.
How It Works in Practice
1. The doorbell is installed in a highly visible location The © InklusionsKlingel is mounted on the exterior of the entrance. It should be easily reachable, including for people using wheelchairs.
2. The person rings the bell If someone requires assistance, they can press the doorbell.
3. The staff are notified Inside the building, an audible signal sounds or a notification appears.
4. Assistance Arrives at the Entrance Staff members come to the door to assist with entry.
5. The Mobile Ramp Is Deployed If a step or threshold is present, a portable folding ramp can be used. In this way, access is often made possible within a short time.

📏 Why is ramp length important?
A ramp must not be too steep.
The higher the step, the longer the ramp must be. A ramp that is too short can be dangerous because it becomes too steep. This can be particularly problematic for wheelchair users, people using walkers, or those with an unsteady gait. As a general guideline, a maximum gradient of 6% is often cited.
This means:
For a height difference of 6 cm, a ramp length of approximately 100 cm is required.
Calculation Formula
Gradient (%) = Height Difference ÷ Ramp Length × 100
Example:
10 cm Height ÷ 167 cm Ramp Length × 100 = approx. 6%
📊 Chart: Ramp Length at a 6% Gradient
Recommended Ramp Length at a 6% Gradient
Reference Values: The higher the step, the longer the ramp should be.

Note: The values are intended as a guide. The actual ramp length depends on the local conditions, the available space and the usage situation.
Important Notice
Not every entrance situation is the same.
The appropriate ramp depends on:
-
Height of the step
-
Available space in front of the entrance
-
Width of the entrance
-
Ground surface
-
Safety during installation
-
Weight and type of wheelchair
-
Use with or without an accompanying person
The association supports finding suitable solutions and reducing barriers in a practical way.

Not a Substitute for Full Accessibility
The © InclusionBell and a mobile ramp do not replace a fully accessible structural conversion.
However, they can be an important first step.
Because every barrier that is overcome means more participation, more self-determination and more dignity in everyday life.
Reducing Barriers Together
